BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are the highlights of China's key education news from the past week:

-- China issues guideline on strengthening ideological, political education

The general offices of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and the State Council have issued a guideline on strengthening reform and innovation of ideological and political theory courses.

Noting that ideological and political education should be strengthened, the guideline listed general principles and specific requirements for the courses.

-- Over 60 pct underprivileged Taiwan children worry about tuition fees

About 65.5 percent of underprivileged children and teenagers in Taiwan worry about not being able to pay their tuition fees, according to a survey released Monday by the Taiwan Fund for Children and Families.

About 52.5 percent of such children and teenagers say they want to study hard but feel helpless as two-thirds of them can not find an appropriate approach.

The survey covered 1,315 children from the fifth grade of primary school to the third grade of junior high school who received help from the fund. The survey was conducted from April 22 to May 31.

-- Sports exam proposed to facilitate exercise in schools

The latest survey showed that 85.3 percent of respondents agree on the inclusion of a sports exam in the senior high school entrance exam to push for more exercise in schools.

Of the 2,002 respondents in the online survey, 76.1 percent are parents of primary and middle school students. Around 65.5 percent of those surveyed believe such an exam will help students develop in an all-round way. Enditem
