Based on David Belasco's drama The Girl of the Golden West, La Fanciulla del West has been considered an oddity in Puccini's work, the only lyrical opera featuring roughneck gold miners in the American west. As Madame Butterfly and Turandot testified before, Belasco liked stories about exoticism. The NCPA production will unveil the China premiere of La Fanciulla del West, under the direction of Thaddeus Strassberger, while Andrea Battistoni takes the baton.
