BEIJING, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese shares closed mixed on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.11 percent to 2,880 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed flat at 9,328.73 points.
The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at roughly 523.7 billion yuan (about 74 billion U.S. dollars), down from 581.6 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Losers outnumbered gainers by 746 to 627 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,057 to 966 in Shenzhen.
Financial firms were among the biggest losers, with Huatai Securities shedding 1.86 percent and China Construction Bank slipping 1.13 percent.
Shipbuilding and agricultural companies gained. China CSSC Holdings Limited, a major shipbuilder, rose 1.55 percent. Gansu Dunhuang Seed Group surged by the daily limit of 10 percent.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.69 percent to close at 1,611.59 points Tuesday. Enditem
