BEIJING, Aug. 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed mixed on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.01 percent, at 2,880.33 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.06 percent lower at 9,322.75 points.

The combined turnover of stocks in the two indices stood at roughly 454.5 billion yuan (about 64.53 billion U.S. dollars), down from 523.7 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 735 to 656 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,137 to 902 in Shenzhen.

Companies in the environmental protection industry were among the biggest winners, with share price of Central Plains Environment Protection Company surging by the daily limit of 10 percent.

Shipbuilding companies mostly saw decline as investors took profit from a sharp rise seen in the previous day, with CSSC Holdings Limited, a major shipbuilder, falling 2.68 percent.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.11 percent to close at 1,609.83 points Wednesday. Enditem
