BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- The following are the highlights of China's science news from the past week:

UNDERWATER TUNNEL INNOVATION PLATFORM

China has established an academic exchange and technology innovation platform for underwater tunnel construction.

There have been improving demands in cross-river and cross-sea tunnels in the fields like railways, highways, water and power supply. The platform, set up by the Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, will push forward the research, design, development, construction, and equipment manufacturing of underwater tunnel projects.

HUMAN EMBRYO IMPLANTATION

Chinese researchers have reconstructed the process of human embryo implantation, generating a map of gene regulatory network and DNA methylation at whole genome-scale. The study provides insights into the complex molecular mechanisms that regulate the implantation of human embryos in the hope of inspiring the reproductive medicine.

STRANGE PULSARS

A Chinese-led research provides important clues to the spin-down mechanism and the magnetic field structure of pulsars, highly magnetized neutron stars born from supernova explosions of massive stars, and the densest stars known to exist.

RICE GENE

Chinese researchers have identified a gene named Ef-cd that enables hybrid rice varieties to have a higher yield and shortens maturity duration by seven to 20 days.

TREE SHREW GENOME

Chinese researchers have released an updated version of the tree shrew genome with more genetic information of the animal.

It suggested that the tree shrew's genomic structure had a higher similarity to that of primates than to mice, said the researchers. The researchers said that they hope the database will provide more help for studying tree shrew biology and modeling human diseases with tree shew models. Enditem
