BEIJING, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

MYSTERIOUS SIGNALS FROM DEEP SPACE

Chinese astronomers have detected repeated fast radio bursts (FRB) -- mysterious signals believed to be from a source about 3 billion light years from Earth -- with the largest and most sensitive radio telescope ever built.

Scientists detected the signals with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) and they are carefully cross-checking and processing them.

BASIC RESEARCH COMMUNICATION

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina signed the Beijing Declaration on Monday, pledging to step up basic research and promote communication among young researchers from the two countries.

The CAS and Leopoldina signed the declaration at the opening ceremony of the first CAS-Leopoldina Joint Conference "Science for Future: All Starts with Basic Research."

UTILITY TUNNEL AT BEIJING'S NEW AIRPORT

The utility tunnel project at the new Beijing Daxing International Airport has passed an initial inspection with world-leading culvert jacking technology.

The utility tunnel is a passage built underground to carry utility lines such as electricity, water and sewer pipes, as well as communication utilities like fiber optics and telephone cables, guaranteeing energy supply to the airport.

INTELLIGENT LAMP POSTS

Beijing has introduced intelligent lamp posts with multiple functions in several districts.

Lamp posts in 17 streets of Haidian District are being updated into smart lamp posts that integrate roles of monitoring traffic violations, showing road signs and holding 5G facilities.

CHINA'S 2019 FUTURE SCIENCE PRIZE

Four scientists won the 2019 Future Science Prize, the first Chinese non-governmental science award jointly initiated by groups of scientists and entrepreneurs.

Winners of the prize will be selected regardless of their nationalities, as long as their achievements are original and innovative, have long-term significance or have passed the tests of time. In addition, it only awards scientists who have made research achievements in the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Enditem
