BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- The following are the highlights of China's key education news from the past week:
-- School principal honored as role model
The Publicity Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee has honored high school principal Chen Liqun as "role model of the times."
Chen, formerly an experienced teacher, had been working as principal of high schools in east China's Zhejiang Province. After his retirement in 2016, Chen went to work voluntarily at a high school in a poverty-stricken area in southwest China's Guizhou Province, and has improved the school's education quality by cultivating a group of high-caliber teachers in the past three years.
Chen's dedication earned him the award for the outstanding principal in education reform and innovation and a top 10 figure in education in 2018.
-- Alibaba launches undergraduate e-commerce program for African students
China's e-commerce giant Alibaba on Sept. 11 launched its first undergraduate cross-border e-commerce program for African students.
The 22 students from Rwanda arrived in the eastern Chinese city of Hangzhou, where Alibaba is headquartered, Tuesday, the 20th anniversary of the tech giant.
-- Cambridge University establishes innovation center in Nanjing
A groundbreaking ceremony for a technology and innovation center jointly established by the University of Cambridge and the Nanjing Municipal government was held in Nanjing on Sept. 10, capital of eastern China's Jiangsu Province.
The Cambridge University-Nanjing Center of Technology and Innovation, located in the newly inaugurated Jiangsu pilot free trade zone, will establish a home for joint research and innovation, in collaboration with industry, the Chinese government and China's global research universities, that is dedicated to the future of creating "smart cities."
