SANAA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- Yemen's health officials launched on Saturday oral cholera vaccinations in capital Sanaa in efforts to curb the spread of the disease that has infected over one million people in the war-torn country.

The door-to-door campaign is being carried out by the local health authorities with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Houthi-controlled Saba news agency reported.

The vaccination campaign is planned to last nine days, aiming at all residents except pregnant women in three major districts in central Sanaa, Saba said.

Meanwhile, activities launched a cholera awareness campaign on social media to lecture people on having access to good sanitation systems and clean drinking water.

Health sector has been badly affected by the war in Yemen, which allowed the spread of cholera and other infectious diseases.

The epidemic has been spreading in Yemen since October 2016, but the number of cholera cases resurged after April 2017 as the country's sewer system stopped working because of war.

Cholera in Yemen has set the world's highest record with the infection of over one million people and over 2,000 have been confirmed dead since 2017, according to WHO. Enditem
