BEIJING, Oct. 14 (Xinhua) -- China was concerned about the severe disaster in Japan caused by Typhoon Hagibis and hoped the people in disaster-stricken areas will come back to normal life at an early date, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said Monday.

"We mourn for the victims and extend sincere sympathies to the bereaved families and the injured," Geng said at a press briefing.

Typhoon Hagibis, which swept across central and eastern Japan on Saturday and Sunday, has claimed at least 58 lives in Japan as of Monday as search-and-rescue operations continued in flood- and landslide-hit areas of Nagano and other prefectures.

In addition, 14 people are listed as missing, and 211 others were injured during the weekend storm, according to the latest NHK tally. Enditem
