JINAN, Oct. 15 (Xinhua) -- The weekly China Shouguang vegetable price index dropped 2.1 percent week on week to 87.46 points in the week ending Sunday.
With suitable temperature for vegetables growth in autumn, the week-on-week price index declined due to sufficient supplies in Shandong and falls of transporting and packaging costs.
Meanwhile, the vegetable varieties in the market saw an increase, thus keeping the sale prices low.
Among all the 10 vegetable varieties covered by the index, six category saw decline in the sub-reading. Sub-indices for three others saw increase. The vegetable prices are forecast to continue falling this week with expected sufficient supplies.
The closely-watched vegetable price index was published by the city of Shouguang in Shandong, China's major vegetable production base and vegetable distribution and price-setting center.
The index was approved by the Ministry of Commerce in 2010 and first published on April 20, 2011 to offer more timely and accurate reference for vegetable growers and traders. Enditem
