BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

EXPECTATION FOR MOON LANDING

Chinese first astronaut Yang Liwei said he was looking forward to setting foot on the moon.

He made the remarks at the 16th anniversary of his flying into space aboard the Shenzhou-5 spacecraft on Oct. 15, 2003, according to the China Manned Space Agency.

"China has started to develop the key technologies related to manned lunar landing. It would be exciting to see Chinese astronauts stepping onto the extraterrestrial object," Yang said.

DNA DATABASE FOR MISSING SOLDIERS

Chinese researchers have established a DNA database of Chinese volunteer soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War and their relatives, providing reliable technical and data support to help more families find their missing kin.

The military medical research institute under the Academy of Military Sciences of the Chinese People's Liberation Army started building the database in 2015 and completed DNA analysis of 494 remains this year.

MARINE INSECT SPECIES

Chinese researchers have discovered a new species of marine insect from the Hermatobatidae family in the Xisha Islands in the South China Sea, marking the first time the insect was recorded in China.

Researchers from Sun Yat-Sen University said the insect, with a body length of 3 to 4 mm, lives on the surface of the ocean and sometimes hides in the tiny holes of coral stone, and eats small arthropods.

XUELONG 2 SET OFF

China's first domestically made polar icebreaker Xuelong 2, or Snow Dragon 2, set off on its maiden voyage for the country's 36th Antarctic expedition from Shenzhen on Tuesday afternoon.

Icebreaker Xuelong will also join the expedition, making it the first time that two polar icebreakers work together on China's Antarctic expedition. Enditem
