GUANGZHOU, Nov. 1 (Xinhua) -- Guangzhou City, the capital of southern China's Guangdong Province, has increased its sister cities to 81, according to local authorities.

Guangzhou's sister cities are from 56 countries worldwide, which include Brazzaville in the Republic of the Congo, Edinburgh in the UK and Fukuoka in Japan, local authorities said at the Commemorative Meeting of 40 Years of International Sister Cities in Guangzhou held on Friday.

Guangzhou City set up its first sister city relation with Fukuoka in May 1979.

"In the past 40 years, many citizens from Fukuoka and Guangzhou have traveled to each other and nurtured friendships," said Takashima Soichiro, mayor of Fukuoka. "At present, Guangzhou has developed as a globally well-known international city." Enditem
