1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close higher Monday

BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.58 percent, at 2,975.49 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.67 percent higher at 9,868.13 points.

The combined trading volume of stocks in the two indexes expanded to 469.41 billion yuan (about 66.69 billion U.S. dollars) from 434.88 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumber losers by 697 to 676 on the Shanghai bourse while losers outnumber gainers by 1,052 to 1,002 in Shenzhen.

Companies in airline business saw robust growth in its share price, with shares of Air China Limited gaining 7.17 percent to 8.97 yuan per share and China Southern Airlines Company Limited gained 7.99 percent to 7.3 yuan per share.

Companies related to electronic cigarette and steel led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.77 percent to close at 1,699.92 points. Enditem
