BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- China's coastal bulk freight market saw growth in overall demand in October, according to the Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE).

The composite index for coastal bulk freight climbed to 1,125.65 in October, up 2.9 percent from a month earlier, the SSE said.

The index averaged 1,038.66 since the beginning of 2019 as of Nov. 4, down from an average of 1,149.05 for 2018.

Last month, the sub-index for metal ore saw the strongest rise of 7 percent to stand at 1,081.58, followed by that for grain and refined oil products.

The sub-index for crude oil remained unchanged in October, according to the exchange.

The SSE initiated the index in 2001 under the guidance of the Ministry of Transport to fully reflect fluctuations in the Chinese coastal transport market. Enditem
