BEIJING, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices closed higher on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.62 percent, at 2,909.2 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.7 percent higher at 9,715.27 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 364.2 billion yuan (about 52 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 401.1 billion yuan in the previous trading day.
Most stocks rose, with gainers outnumbering losers by 996 to 402 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,510 to 542 in Shenzhen.
Companies in steel industry posted strong performances, with stocks of Zhejiang Jiuli Hi-tech Metals Co.,Ltd. surging by the daily 10-percent limit to close at 9.2 yuan per share.
Shares in the industries of spirits and gold led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.46 percent to close at 1,682.49 points Monday. Enditem
