TRIPOLI -- The UN High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) on Friday called for closure of immigration detention centers in Libya and release of refugees and migrants into the urban community.

"Currently, there are nearly 4,200 people held in detention centers in Libya, of whom 2,450 are persons of concern to UNHCR," the UNHCR said. (Libya-UN-Refugees)

GAZA -- The monthly economic loss in the Gaza Strip has grown to 100 million U.S. dollars because of the continuing deterioration, a Palestinian committee said Friday.

"The crises of the economic sector are directly caused by the Israeli siege imposed on the coastal enclave since 2007," said Jamal al-Khudari, chairman of the Popular Committee to Challenge the Israeli Siege. (Gaza-Economy-Deterioration)

BAGHDAD -- Up to 16 protesters were killed and some 47 others wounded on Friday in an attack by unknown gunmen on demonstrators in Iraq's capital Baghdad, a security official said.

The attack took place in the evening when unidentified gunmen in four-wheel drive and pick-up vehicles broke into al-Khalani Square in central Baghdad and opened fire with their assault rifles on dozens of demonstrators in the square, the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. CAIRO -- Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities announced on Friday that it has discovered a number of huge archaeological stone blocks near Giza pyramids west of the capital Cairo.

The ministry said in a statement that the archaeological excavators at Mit Rahina area of Giza unearthed 19 ancient blocks of pink granite and limestone that used to be parts of the great temple of Ptah. (Egypt-Antiquities) Enditem
