BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- The following are a selection of art festivals, shows and exhibitions available in Beijing in the coming week:

NCPA Opera Film Aida

Date: Dec. 19

Time: 7:00 p.m.

Venue: Concert Hall, National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA)

Introduction:

In ancient Egypt, a pharaoh reigns and his army would fight against Ethiopia again. The Egyptian warrior Radames goes out to fight against the king of Ethiopia Amonasro. The princess of Egypt Amneris has fallen in love with Radames, but the latter loves the female slave Aida, who turns out to be the daughter of Amonasro.

Radames returns home in triumph, and Aida sees her father among the war prisoners. The king of Egypt frees all the captives but Aida and her father, and announces a marriage contract between Amneris and Radames. Aide decides to pay a last visit to Amneris. Amonasro persuades his daughter to steal confidential information. Radames divulges military secrets and Amonasro pops up with his real identity.

Nevertheless, Radames is caught red-handed by the high priest when he runs away. Later, he is sentenced to a live burial and Aida is determined to die with him. The lovers hold each other in arms as their souls fly off to the Kingdom of Heaven.

A Story About Growing Up

Date: Dec. 13-22

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Venue: Multi-functional Theatre, National Centre for the Performing Arts

Introduction:

A Story About Growing Up is the NCPA's fourth children's opera commission, adapted from a fairy tale of the same title written and published by Ren Rongrong, a famous Chinese children's literary translator and writer, in 1956.

This funny, lively and extremely instructive fable is about two children, one being careless, named "the Fool", and the other willful and bad-tempered, named "the Unhappy Boy".

In the Solitude of Cotton Fields

Date: Dec. 21-22

Time: 7:30 p.m. (Dec. 21); 9:00 p.m. (Dec. 22)

Venue: Longfu Theater
