DUBAI, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The UAE's Federal Customs Authority said an attempt to smuggle some 297 grams of rough diamonds worth nearly 90,000 U.S. dollars was foiled at the Sharjah International Airport.

An African man, yet to be identified, had swallowed the diamonds placed in three plastic bags, planning to smuggle and sell them in the UAE, the official WAM news agency reported on Thursday, citing a statement of the federal customs authority.

Upon arrival, the man had his passport seized and was escorted to customs inspectors who searched his luggage and body for the diamonds.

Working for a mobile phone company, the man said he visited the UAE several times but this was the first time he attempted to illegally bring diamonds to the country. Enditem
