JINAN, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Experts are using the latest technology to help track the ages of the springs in the city of Jinan, east China's Shandong Province.

Using carbon-14 technology, experts determined that the springs in the "City of Springs" are between 23,500 years old and 46,000 years old, according to provincial experts on underground water environment protection and restoration.

It is the first time for Shandong authorities to accurately calculate the ages of the springs.

Jinan has rich resources of springs, including more than 640 famous ones.

"The finding will be vital for the protection of the springs," said local official Li Chuanlei. Enditem
