1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares end lower Tuesday

BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended lower Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.28 percent at 3,106.82 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.47 percent lower at 10,988.77 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 701.94 billion yuan (about 101.8 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 668.03 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 782 to 611 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,227 to 850 in Shenzhen.

Stocks related to the communication services and cobalt led the gains, with shares of Xinhua Net Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to 29.38 yuan.

Bucking the upward trend, shares in the liquor sector led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.65 percent to close at 1,922.56 points. Enditem
