BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

COMMUNICATION SATELLITE LAUNCH

A broadband communication satellite, developed by Beijing-based company GalaxySpace, was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwest China at 11:02 a.m. Thursday (Beijing Time).

Deployed in low-Earth orbit (LEO), the satellite has a communication capacity up to 10Gbps. Relative technological tests will be conducted on the satellite.

GalaxySpace aims to build a LEO broadband satellite constellation and create a global 5G communication network.

RICE GENE DATABASE

Chinese researchers have developed a database on rice epigenomic information to facilitate rice breeding, according to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS).

Researchers from the Biotechnology Research Institute of the CAAS created a database named eRice, to integrate epigenomic annotations for both japonica and indica rice, two main cultivars in Asia.

The database combines artificial intelligence technology to conduct deep mining of the data. It will be updated to provide a broader understanding of the epigenetic regulation of complex biological processes in rice as well as a guide for future molecular design efforts.

CHINA-DEVELOPED ARJ21 REGIONAL JETLINERS

China's domestically-developed ARJ21 regional aircraft is undergoing its commercial operation phase by linking 38 cities from home and abroad, according to its developer Thursday.

The ARJ21 passenger jetliners have carried a total of 690,000 passengers on 37 air routes, said the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC).

Developed by the COMAC, the ARJ21 is China's first turbo-fan regional passenger jetliner. It was put into commercial service for the first time in June 2016.

CHINA'S CIVILIAN HIGH-DEFINITION MAPPING SATELLITE

China's first civilian high-definition mapping satellite Ziyuan III 01 has celebrated its 8th birthday in orbit.

Since it was launched in January 2012, the satellite has sent back 3D data covering 79 million square kilometers of the globe as of Dec. 31, 2019.

It has enabled China to produce 1:50,000-scale maps, ridding the country's dependence on imports of satellite images, according to the ministry.

The Ziyuan III 01 is tasked with providing data for the country's land-resources investigation, disaster prevention, agriculture development, environmental surveying and urban planning. Enditem
