VILLARS, Switzerland, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Sweden's Erik Wahlberg seized the men's Freestyle Skiing Ski Cross gold medal at the Winter Youth Olympic Games here on Sunday while Switzerland's Marie Karoline Krista won the women's race.

Wahlberg was in the third positon during the Big Finals' fierce starting period, but the Swede overtook his opponents to finish 0.21 seconds faster than Russia's Artem Bazhin.

Bazhin's compatriot Andrei Gorbachev took the bronze.

Wahlberg said he felt "it was over" after found himself in third, but the he didn't give up.

"I was scrambling, then I gained 10 metres and overtook them. I got the inside lane and took the shortest route," said the champion.

In the women's race, home favorite Marie Karoline Krista took the gold. Diana Cholenska from the Czech Republic and Russia's Vladislava Baliukina settled for second and third places.

"Competing at home, I was really motivated by the fans," said Krista, who continued team Switzerland's winning streak in Villars Winter Park at Winter YOG.

Before Krista's victory, this venue had witnessed 3 golds and 2 silvers for Switzerland in Ski Mountaineering race.

Competing with four racers thundering down the track and constantly jockeying for position, Ski Cross is a dangerous but attractive sport.

"It (Ski Cross) makes me happy, because it's like being on a rollercoaster, it brings the adrenaline," said Wahlberg. Enditem
