BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Li Zhanshu on Monday stressed giving better play to the role of deputies to the people's congresses.

Li, chairman of the National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, presided over a symposium for a group of NPC deputies to hear their opinions and suggestions on a draft work report of the NPC Standing Committee.

The deputies made their suggestions on how to revise the work report and to improve the work of the people's congresses. They said the NPC Standing Committee had made new achievements in fields such as legislation and supervision over the past year.

Li said the NPC Standing Committee will further improve the draft work report as well as its work.

Stressing the centralized and unified leadership of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, Li called for efforts to focus on the Party's and the country's key tasks when planning and carrying out the work of people's congresses.

Li also urged the NPC deputies to make full preparations for the third annual meeting of the 13th NPC and perform their duties attentively and diligently. Enditem
