1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close lower Tuesday

BEIJING, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended lower Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.41 percent to end at 3,052.14 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.46 percent lower at 10,953.41 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 690.5 billion yuan (about 101 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 679 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 1,190 to 276 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,651 to 503 in Shenzhen.

Shares in the airports and air transport, tourism and liquor-making sectors led the losses.

Stocks related to biomedical sector bucked the downward trend and led the gains, with shares of Guangzhou Baiyunshan Pharmaceutical Holdings Co., Ltd., a drug manufacturer, up 2.85 percent.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.76 percent to close at 1,967.03 points Tuesday. Enditem
