Taiwan reports first native novel coronavirus infection

TAIPEI, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan on Tuesday confirmed the first native infection of the novel coronavirus that caused pneumonia, raising the total confirmed cases on the island to eight.

The eighth patient is the husband of the fifth confirmed case, a Taiwan woman in her 50s who returned to Taiwan from central China's Wuhan, the center of the epidemic, on Jan. 20, the island's epidemic monitoring agency said at a press conference.

The woman showed symptoms of fever and muscle ache on Jan. 25 and was confirmed to be infected by the virus on Jan. 27. Her husband went to hospital for cough on Jan. 26 and was confirmed of having the virus Tuesday.

The latest patient has been in stable condition, and authorities are trying to identify and monitor the health condition of people who had contact with him.

As of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the island had 249 suspected cases under quarantine. Enditem
