HANGZHOU, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- A CT scanner fixed with a robot able to automatically carry out sterilization with strong ultraviolet (UV) light has helped speed up the clinical diagnosis of suspected pneumonia patients in Wuhan, capital of China's Hubei Province, the center of the novel coronavirus outbreak.

The equipment developed by professor Yang Yong with the School of Automation of the Hangzhou University of Electronic Science and Technology in east China's Zhejiang Province has been brought to Wuhan to assist in the anti-epidemic fight by a medical team from Zhejiang.

Deployed in the Wuhan Union Hospital affiliated to Tongji Medical College of the Huazhong University of Science and Technology, the CT scanner has been testing more than 200 people every day.

Wang Gang, a doctor at the hospital, said a large number of patients are waiting for the CT examination. With the robot, the CT scanner can conduct automated disinfection after completing each round of examination.

"The UV sterilization by the mobile robot can be completed in a few minutes, while it takes half an hour for medical staff to spray sterilization after each test to prevent from cross-infection of the epidemic," said Wang.

Chinese medical workers have been racing against time to contain the epidemic. CT imaging is required in both prognosis and the recovery judgment of an infected patient.

According to Yang, the developer, 20 more CT scanners fixed with the sterilization robots will be sent to Wuhan and other cities to assist with the medical treatment.

The overall confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus infections on the Chinese mainland had reached 74,185 by the end of Tuesday, and 2,004 people had died of the disease. Enditem
