Former Chinese national fencing coach Wen Guogang dies at 80

SHANGHAI, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Wen Guogang, the former head coach of the Chinese national fencing team, passed away at 80 here on Monday, according to an obituary released by the Chinese Fencing Association.

Born in Hengyang, Hunan Province, Wen won the men's foil crown in the second National Games in 1965. After retirement, he became a coach for Jiangsu provincial team in 1975 and helped them grab three gold medals in the third National Games the same year.

Wen was among the first generation of fencing coaches in China. During his coaching career, he cultivated Luan Jujie, China's first Olympic champion in women's foil.

Wen also served as vice president of the Chinese Fencing Association and a member of the Chinese Olympic Committee. Enditem
