HARBIN, March 30 (Xinhua) -- Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province activated a second-level emergency response after a leakage of mine tailings, the provincial government said Sunday night.

According to a notice released by the provincial government, the province decided to activate a second-level emergency response from 9 a.m. on Sunday.

The leakage happened at 1:40 p.m. Saturday at the tailings pond of the Yichun Luming Mining Co., Ltd. in the city of Yichun.

Part of the leakage entered into a local river, but necessary measures have been taken to secure safe drinking water for local residents.

Relevant provincial departments have sent experts to the site after the leakage. China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment has also sent a work team to Yichun on Sunday. Enditem
