BEIJING, March 31 (Xinhua) -- China's first cargo-oriented airport in Ezhou, central China's Hubei Province, is expected to begin operation by the end of 2021 or early 2022.

Construction on the Ezhou airport project started in the second half last year, and construction has been resumed, according to the National Reform and Development Commission (NRDC).

The Ezhou airport is the country's first cargo airport, with the functional orientation of the air cargo hub and feeder airport for passenger transport.

It is also China's first airport project that introduces social capital and enterprises.

The airport's annual air cargo throughput capacity is designed to reach 3.3 million tonnes by 2030, according to the NRDC.

Ezhou is located in China's central region, from which the country's major cities can be reached by air in less than one-and-a-half hours.

The Ezhou airport is tailored to meet the surging air cargo transport, which is boosted by the e-commerce and express delivery industries.

It will primarily serve express delivery companies, including the industry leader SF Express which is also one of the major investors of the airport.

China has paid efforts to facilitate the air cargo capacity in airport construction works. In the 2021-2025 period, the country will keep strengthening the sector in regions with market prospects, according to the NRDC. Enditem
