HARBIN, March 31 (Xinhua) -- The leakage of mine tailings in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province has been stopped after around-the-clock efforts, local authorities said Tuesday.

The leakage happened at 1:40 p.m. Saturday at the tailings pond of the Yichun Luming Mining Co., Ltd. in the city of Yichun. Part of the leakage polluted a local river, according to the provincial leakage control headquarters.

Relevant provincial departments have sent experts to the site after the leakage. China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment also sent a work team to Yichun on Sunday.

Nearly 1,200 people were mobilized to stop the mine tailings leak, said local authorities.

Necessary measures including setting up interception dams and placing flocculant and activated carbon have been taken to secure safe drinking water for local residents.

Environmental monitoring has been intensified and water intaking has been suspended from Sunday night in the city of Tieli, while an alternate source has been used. Enditem
