NANNING, May 20 (Xinhua) -- A whale stranded in the sea area of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Tuesday was rescued and led to the open waters.

The mammal, believed to be a pilot whale, was first spotted at an inner port in the city of Beihai by Wu Jianming, who runs a local seafood restaurant.

"Looking to the sea from the coast, I found a black shadow among the fishing boats. It turned out to be a small whale," said Wu.

Wu said there were a lot of boats docked in the port due to the fishing offseason, making it easy for the mammal to be hurt by propellers and ropes. Local fishermen then volunteered to drive their vessels to guard the whale.

Nong Qiang, an officer with the city's marine and fishery order enforcement team, said they headed to the site together with experts from the aquatic wildlife rescue and reproduction center of the city after receiving the report about the stranded whale.

Through onsite observation, experts from a nature reserve of the region estimated it was a pilot whale weighing 150 kg with a length of 2.75 meters.

Workers from the fishery affairs department later led the whale to the open waters. Enditem
