1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close lower Thursday

BEIJING, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Thursday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.55 percent, at 2,867.92 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.94 percent lower at 10,845.4 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 626.18 billion yuan (about 88.36 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 686.7 billion yuan seen in the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers 969 to 465 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,559 to 589 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in the broadcasting and TV industry led the gains, with Shaanxi Broadcast & TV Network Intermediary (Group) Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to end at 7.32 yuan per share.

Companies in the sectors of agriculture and photoresists led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 0.88 percent to close at 2,099.43 points Thursday. Enditem
