BEIJING, May 23 (Xinhua) -- Amid the further containment of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), China is striving to get back to work and resume business and production. The following are the highlights of the past week:
-- WORK RESUMPTION OF SMEs
About 91 percent of China's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) had resumed operation as of Monday after disruptions caused by COVID-19, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
Some 93 percent of SMEs in the manufacturing and construction sectors had resumed work, while around 87 percent of SMEs in the hotel and catering sectors had restarted business.
-- TRANSPORTATION
Shanghai Pudong International Airport has opened two "cabin rooms" to screen air passengers for the novel coronavirus, the Shanghai Customs said.
With a total area of 360 square meters, the two rooms located at the T1 and T2 terminals have 44 sampling booths that can work around the clock to offer nucleic acid tests for even big passenger flows, according to customs officials.
Their opening is part of the airport's preparation for resumed passenger traffic, the customs said.
-- ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION
China's daily electricity consumption in the first 10 days of May climbed 5.9 percent from one year earlier, according to data released by the National Energy Administration.
The country's average daily consumption of refined oil reached 760,000 tonnes in March, 80 percent of the level recorded in the same month of last year, while that of coal hit 9.8 million tonnes in March, 95 percent of that registered last year.
-- EDUCATION
South China's Guangdong Province will reopen kindergartens and special education schools starting June 2.
Local kindergartens and special education schools, however, should first pass on-site checks and receive government approvals for reopening, according to the provincial education department.
The department ordered kindergartens to stagger school start times for epidemic prevention and control.
-- ENTERTAINMENT
Southwest China's Guizhou Province announced Tuesday that all cinemas and exhibition centers are allowed to reopen after being closed for months due to the COVID-19 epidemic.
Visitors to cinemas are required to book tickets online, have their temperatures taken, sit separately and wear masks during their stay. In addition, theaters are only allowed to reach 50 percent of their capacity.
Necessary meetings and exhibitions can also be held in Guizhou after the announcement, with the number of participants strictly controlled to less than half of the total number of seats. Enditem
