1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close higher Tuesday

BEIJING, May 26 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.01 percent at 2,846.55 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.1 percent higher at 10,815.43 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 530.06 billion yuan (about 74.35 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 490.63 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers 1,277 to 158 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,991 to 174 in Shenzhen.

Stocks in the wireless headset, sub-new stocks and medical equipment industries led the gains, with Beijing Balance Medical Technology Co. Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to end at 62.16 yuan per share.

Companies in the banking, oil, port and shipping sectors led the losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2.96 percent to close at 2,112.97 points. Enditem
