BEIJING, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.34 percent, at 2,836.80 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.23 percent lower at 10,682.70 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 573.19 billion yuan (about 80.63 billion U.S. dollars), expanding from 530.06 billion yuan the previous trading day.
Losers outnumbered gainers 836 to 598 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,341 to 777 in Shenzhen.
Stocks in the dairy and household light industries posted strong performance, with shares of Beijing Sanyuan Foods Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to end at 5.84 yuan per share.
Bucking the trend, companies in the sectors of gallium nitride, biological vaccines and digital currency led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, lost 1.96 percent to close at 2,071.47 points. Enditem
