SHENZHEN, May 29 (Xinhua) -- China Southern Airlines, the country's largest air carrier, said on Friday that a new air cargo route linking southern China's Shenzhen with the U.S. cities of Anchorage and Chicago will be launched on May 31.

It will be the first regular intercontinental freight route opened by Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport this year and the first scheduled intercontinental cargo route from Shenzhen to Chicago.

The first flight is due to transport nearly 90 tonnes of epidemic-prevention supplies, including medical masks, forehead thermometers and protective suits, produced by enterprises in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

The route is scheduled to operate three times per week, on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, respectively.

China Southern Airlines said that, so far, it has transported more than 470 tonnes of anti-epidemic supplies from Shenzhen to Sydney, Melbourne, Dubai and Manila.

The opening of the new cargo route will further facilitate the logistics, information flow and capital flow of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, according to the airline.

Guangzhou-based China Southern is the largest air carrier in Asia. By the end of 2019, it operated a fleet of more than 860 airplanes, including passenger aircraft and all-cargo freighters. Enditem
