RAMALLAH, June 14 (Xinhua) -- Palestine has submitted an official request to hold a UN session to discuss the Israeli plan to annex parts of the West Bank and take appropriate steps towards it, a senior Palestinian said on Sunday.

"This request came as part of the Palestinian leadership plans to prevent Israel from implementing its annexation," Palestinian Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad al-Maliki told the Palestinian radio station Voice of Palestine.

The UN Secretary Council (UNSC) is going to hold a virtual meeting on June 24 to discuss the report of the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on implementation of Secretary Council Resolution 2334, al-Maliki said.

Al-Maliki pointed out that Palestine is going to talk about the seriousness of the Israeli annexation plan during the coming meeting, hoping that the members of the UNSC would speak about it in order to prepare for the emergency session of the UN General Assembly when its date is set.

In April, Benjamin Netanyahu, leader of the right-wing Likud party, signed a power-sharing deal to form a unity government with his former opponent, Benny Gantz, leader of the centrist Blue and White party.

Under the deal, both leaders agreed to impose Israeli sovereignty on territories "that are part of the historic lands of Israel" on July 1.

The annexation is part of U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East peace plan.

Israel captured the West Bank territories during the 1967 Middle East war. Enditem
