1st LD-Writethru: Chinese shares close higher Wednesday

BEIJING, June 24 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 0.3 percent to end at 2,979.55 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.17 percent higher at 11,813.53 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two major indices totaled 728.72 billion yuan (about 103.28 billion U.S. dollars), contracting from 758.32 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Losers outnumbered gainers by 896 to 536 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,335 to 800 in Shenzhen.

Companies in the fields of semiconductor, banking and game led the gains, with shares of Yangzhou Yangjie Electronic Technology Co., Ltd. surging by the daily limit of 10 percent to 31.74 yuan per share.

Bucking the trend, shares of agricultural planting, catering and animal vaccine sectors reported heavy losses.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.02 percent to close at 2,382.47 points Wednesday. Enditem
