BEIJING, July 8 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index up 1.74 percent at 3,403.44 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.84 percent higher at 13,406.37 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.54 trillion yuan (about 219 billion U.S. dollars), exceeding 1.5 trillion yuan for three consecutive trading days.

On the seventh day of a gaining streak, the Shanghai Composite Index secured continued steam late in the afternoon session with 1,259 stocks rising on the bourse, while winners outweighed losers by 1,859 to 313 in the Shenzhen market.

Shares of brokerages and electronic cigarettes led the gains, with the Pacific Securities Co. Ltd. rising by the daily limit of 10 percent to 4.92 yuan, buoyed by recent policy incentives to reform the capital market.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 2.34 percent to close at 2,651.97 points. Enditem
