BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Here are the highlights of education news in China from the past week:

-- New schools to promote health governance modernization

Peking Union Medical College has established the School of Population Medicine and Public Health and the School of Health Policy and Management.

The move will facilitate the coordination of healthcare and disease prevention sectors and advance the modernization of China's system and capacity for health governance.

-- China tightens supervision of student contests

China's Ministry of Education has issued a circular ordering national student contest organizers to check the veracity of award-winning projects.

National contests for primary and secondary school students should improve review standards and procedures as well as supervision mechanisms to prevent cheating. The circular also prohibited the charging of fees from participants.

-- China relieves student loan borrowers of debt burden

China has revised its state-subsidized student loan policy in a bid to further reduce the debt burden of college student borrowers, according to an official circular.

State-subsidized student loans are priced at 30 basis points below the loan prime rate (LPR) - a market-based benchmark lending rate - of the same class and same term, said the circular. Moreover, the grace period for principal repayments has been extended from three years to five years after graduation. Enditem
