BEIJING, July 31 (Xinhua) -- The following is a summary of published science and technology news of China.

ARJ21 REGIONAL JETLINER

China's independently-developed ARJ21 regional jetliner has been verified capable of operating in all high-plateau airports, its developer announced Thursday after due testings.

An ARJ21 airplane returned to Shanghai on Thursday after completing a half-month flight test, which thoroughly examined the aircraft's operation capacity in a high-plateau airport environment, said the Shanghai-based Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC).

LAKE SEDIMENT CORE ON QINGHAI-TIBET PLATEAU

Using self-developed drill systems, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) obtained a lake sediment core with a length of 100.63 meters at a depth of 95 meters in Lake Namtso, a major lake on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The core samples are expected to help scientists analyze the history of climate and environmental changes on the central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau over the past 150,000 years.

CHINESE NAMES FOR MARS TERRAIN FEATURES

The Chinese Astronomical Society (CAS) has recently released recommended Chinese names of 811 Mars terrain features on its website, following the country's first Mars exploration mission.

To facilitate scientific research and science popularization, the CAS invited experts to translate the Mars terrain terms issued by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) before July 15, 2020 into Chinese.

BIG SCIENCE PROJECTS

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) has started pre-development of two big science projects. Developed by the Hefei Institute of Physical Science under the CAS, one of the projects is used for stereoscopic detection from the atmosphere, aimed at supporting decision-making for regional air pollution control and related issues.

The other big science project involves construction of steady-state magnetic devices with the highest magnetic field strength in the world. It aims to serve major national needs such as new electronic materials, as well as the energy and chemical industry, by constructing high temperature superconducting magnet system, and strong magnetic field and laser integrated system.
