HONG KONG, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The total incomes of Hong Kong's restaurants continued to decline in the second quarter of this year as the COVID-19 epidemic still bites the economy, official data showed.
Hong Kong's restaurants were provisionally estimated to earn 21.2 billion Hong Kong dollars (2.73 billion U.S. dollars) from April to June, down 25.9 percent from a year ago, data of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government said Monday.
The drop was less than the 31.3-percent year-on-year slump in the first quarter.
The decline narrowed thanks to the abated local epidemic situation and consequential easing of social distancing measures in May and June, a government spokesman said.
For the first half, the combined incomes of restaurants went down 28.7 percent year on year.
The spokesman said the business environment of the food and beverage sector is expected to be highly challenging in the near term as social distancing measures have been tightened again in response to the surge in local infection cases since July.
The government will closely monitor the developments, he added. Enditem
