HONG KONG, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The Hong Kong Observatory issued the No. 8 Northeast Gale or Storm Signal on Tuesday night as Typhoon Higos was approaching China's southern coast.

In its tropical cyclone warning, the observatory said Higos, centered about 110 km south of Hong Kong at 11:00 p.m. local time, is expected to move northwest at about 20 km per hour towards the coast of western Guangdong Province and skirt about 100 km to the southwest of Hong Kong within the next couple of hours.

The No. 8 signal will remain in force for a period of time overnight and Wednesday morning, the observatory said.

The observatory suggested the public stay away from the shoreline and not engage in water sports and warned that some low-lying areas may have flooding or backflow of seawater. Enditem
