BEIJING, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tennis star Wang Qiang has announced that she will not play during the rest of the 2020 season.

In a message posted on Weibo on Friday, Wang, China's highest-ranked female tennis player, said she made the decision toughly and withdrew from the 2020 season.

Wang revealed that she didn't have a coach and legitimate training due to the pandemic.

"My waist disc herniation has been acting up again," she said, adding that she would be back next year.

Wang is 30th in the WTA singles rankings. She participated in six WTA tournaments this year and won seven matches. She defeated former world No. 1, Serena Williams at the Australian Open where she entered the quarterfinals this January.

Her last appearance in the WTA tournaments was in Doha in February, defeated by Elise Mertens in the first round.

With the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, all the big international sports events including tennis came to a grinding halt early in the year.

Wang had to end the cooperative relation with her coach Thomas Drouet from France in this August.

In 2014, Wang won the women's singles tennis title in the Incheon Asian Games. Enditem
