GUIYANG, China, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- The 2020 Guiyang youth football tournament has taken place here in Guiyang, the capital of southwest China's Guizhou province, after being delayed for almost half a year by the COVID-19 epidemic.

The tournament, attracting more than 800 primary and secondary school students, will last for about half a month and roll out more than 90 matches. It is the first sports competition for the school students of Guiyang this year.

All the participants need to take epidemic prevention and control measures when they are entering the football pitches, such as disinfecting their hands and receiving body temperature checks. However, the epidemic has been brought under control in Guizhou.

As the participants have not taken football training in the first half of the year, all of them are excited at taking part in the tournament and have prepared for nearly two months before it gets started.

Zhang Jiayi, a 14-year-old student from Guiyang No.2 experimental middle school, said that he is excited to be back on the football pitch to play competitive matches.

"It has been a long time I have not played competitive matches with so many teams, and I am so happy to be back on the pitch again," he said, adding that he will do what he can to help his team win the championship.

Zu Shanfa, head referee of the tournament, said the competition provides a platform for the students to keep fitness and to improve their football skills.

"The tournament gives the students a good opportunity to communicate with one another through football matches and help them improve their body condition as well as football skills," he added. Enditem
