SHANGHAI, Sept. 13 (Xinhua) -- French beauty giant Clarins said it has opened a laboratory in Shanghai to better identify and meet the needs of Chinese consumers.

Located in the city's Jing'an District, the new lab covers an area of more than 500 square meters and is the first lab Clarins has set up outside Paris.

Vitro experiments, sensory analysis and clinical tests will be conducted in the lab. Researchers can screen the active ingredients of products and verify their efficacy, test and compare skin conditions before and after use of the products, as well as invite Chinese consumers for sensory evaluations.

Olivier Courtin-Clarins, managing director of Clarins Group, said the company has seen great possibilities for cooperation with its Chinese partners since their first visit to China in 1999.

The opening of the China lab will allow Clarins to better understand the skin needs of Asian women, and get a closer look at China's most cutting-edge technological developments in the fields of science and technology, humanities and biology, Olivier Courtin-Clarins said, adding that the company hopes to draw more inspiration from traditional Chinese medicine for product development.

The China lab is expected to not only develop new products for the Asian market, but also bring continuous innovation to Clarins' global markets.

Zhong Xiaoming, executive vice president of Clarins Greater China, said China is the largest market for Clarins, as well as for the global beauty industry.

"The consumption rebound in China since the COVID-19 outbreak beat our expectations. Our market performance in China has fully recovered, and we even achieved accelerated growth in some regions," Zhong said, noting that Clarins will make bolder and longer-term decisions in the Chinese market.
