LHASA, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The first regional hospital for women and children started trial operations on Thursday in Lhasa, capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region.

During the trial-operation period, the hospital will open several outpatient and auxiliary departments covering obstetrics and gynecology, women's health care, pediatrics and children's health care, examination and pharmacy, according to Weng Changjing, vice president of the hospital.

"The hospital provides the public with a brand-new medical service platform," said Weng. "It will help to realize the goal of reducing the maternal and infant mortality rates and increasing the hospital delivery rate."

The hospital has 249 employees and is equipped with high-end diagnosis and treatment equipment such as the digital gastrointestinal machine and automatic biochemical analyser.

The design of the hospital building is a combination of traditional Tibetan culture and modern architectural art. In appearance, it resembles a dancing hada, the ceremonial silk scarf regarded as a token of respect in Tibetan culture. Enditem
