CHENGDU, China, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Jiangsu sailed past Shaanxi 89-69 for their third consecutive victory, while defense played a big role in Xinjiang's 68-53 victory over Shanghai in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association (WCBA) campaign here on Wednesday.

Outscoring its opponent 28-14 after the first quarter, Jiangsu was never really challenged by Shaanxi over the ensuing three quarters.

Luo Xinyu bagged 18 points for Jiangsu, who also got 14 points apiece from Xu Chenyan and Jiang Jiayin.

Jiangsu took to attacking the basket from the paint early on, before going up 20-9 on a 14-0 surge. Jiangsu went on another 16-3 run to start the second quarter to extend its advantage to almost 30 points, and Shaanxi came no closer than 14 points during the entire second half.

Despite its backcourt duo of Chen Yanyu and Chen Xinlei's lackluster performance, Shaanxi can still find positives as sophomore Yu Jiarui posted a career-high 35 points.

Xinjiang restrained Shanghai to five points in the first quarter and 18 at the break on the way to winning the game.

Wang Lili made 11 of 20 field shots and scored 25 points for Xinjiang. Wang Siyu helped with 11.

As opposed to early sluggishness last game, Xinjiang heated up quickly into the game with a 10-0 surge on Shanghai's consecutive turnovers, before Bao Meng's jumper snapped Shanghai's scoring drought over six minutes. Xinjiang set up a 10-point cushion as the first quarter ran out.

After substitutes stepped in, Xinjiang maintained its level of defense, holding Shanghai to shot-clock violations on several occasions and leading 27-18 at halftime.

Shanghai guard Peng Szu-Chin hobbled off the court, seemingly through a strain, just one minute into the second half. Without one of its main scorers, Shanghai could not catch up on the offensive end as Xinjiang pulled away through the backcourt combo Wang Siyu and Wang Lili's efforts.

On the Shanghai side, Zhou Yuyan had 11 points, and Han Xu bagged 10.

Also on Wednesday, powered by Dilana Dilishati's 21 points, Dongguan handed Wuhan its third straight loss into the season at 80-62. Enditem
