BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Major Chinese stock indices ended higher Tuesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index rising 0.47 percent to close at 3,328.1 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 1.36 percent higher at 13,603.88 points.

The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 667.39 billion yuan (about 99.7 billion U.S. dollars), shrinking from 739.1 billion yuan the previous trading day.

Gainers outnumbered losers 951 to 411 on the Shanghai bourse and 1,671 to 517 in Shenzhen.

Automakers led the gains, with Shenzhen-based BYD Company Limited surging 9.31 percent to 140 yuan.

Liquor and beverage companies also secured solid gains, as stock of the renowned Kweichow Moutai Co. Ltd. climbed 2.06 percent to 1,734 yuan per share.

Share prices of many companies in sectors including railways, insurance and agriculture bucked the upward trend.

The ChiNext Index, China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 1.89 percent to close at 2,740.58 points. Enditem
