BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese sci-tech official has called for deeper and wider international cooperation in science and technology.

China not only benefits from and takes part in sci-tech opening up and cooperation, but also contributes to and pushes forward international sci-tech progress to the benefit of mankind, Wang Zhigang, minister of science and technology, said Wednesday.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, China has been planning and promoting innovation with a global vision and blended into the global innovation network, Wang said.

The country has pushed sci-tech exchanges and cooperation between scientists in China and across the world in the fields of basic research and global issues to enhance public knowledge and collective wisdom of human society, he said.

Wang urged the development of a comprehensive, deep and wide sci-tech opening up and cooperation pattern to strengthen intergovernmental bilateral and multilateral sci-tech exchanges and cooperation.

In sci-tech, China has built cooperative relations with 161 countries and regions, signed 114 intergovernmental agreements and joined more than 200 international organizations and multilateral mechanisms, said Wang.

China has also taken part in key international science programs and projects such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor and the Square Kilometer Array.

Within a sci-tech innovative action plan under the Belt and Road Initiative, the country has supported more than 8,300 youth scientists from several countries to work in China, trained 180,000 people, launched the construction of 33 "Belt and Road" joint laboratories, built cooperative relations on sci-tech parks with eight countries, built five national-level technology transfer platforms and launched a Sino-African sci-tech innovation cooperation center, Wang said.

An increasing number of Chinese scientists and researchers have contributed to solving major global issues. China shared its COVID-19 prevention and control experience with the international society by building an open scientific service platform, which served 175 countries and regions, and was downloaded more than 160 million times.

To cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, China has been pushing forward international cooperation in the research and development of detection kits, drugs and treatment methods as well as vaccines.

The country has also joined COVAX, an international initiative aimed at ensuring equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines, becoming the largest economy so far to support the initiative. Enditem
